To the Farm School and all those who make it possible,
Thank you for sharing the work of this year with me.
Thank you for the meals, and all the other kinds of nourishment.
Thank you for the invitation–and impetus–to stretch. Thank you for the rewards of doing so...
- Sophie, Farm School Learn to Farm participant
Since 2002, The Farm School has offered a practical, real-world agricultural education for aspiring farmers, educators and community leaders. The Learn to Farm program is a full-time, residential immersion in the work and rhythms of sustainable farm life. Everyday, and in every way, their student farmers learn to farm by farming, supported by coursework, mentoring and instruction from our staff farmers.
The Farm School was a founding member of the FBEN because they believe that giving students of any age a conceptual understanding of farming and physical competency in a wide range of skills will build a better future. Their Learn to Farm Program is unique in the world of farm-based education. It equips participants with farming skills as well as exposure to an established, complex and important farm-based education program for school-aged kids.
The Farm School has several 'visiting days' for interested applicants. The Farm School Learn to Farm Program runs October 2018 - September 2019. Students will learn about forestry, animal husbandry, carpentry, mechanics, business planning, homesteading, marketing, cooking, organic vegetable production and beyond. The program curriculum reaches one hand back into history to pull forward the best of what traditional agriculture has to offer and with the other hand pushes ahead into cutting edge creative and dynamic ways of enriching our stewardship of land.
