Pearlstone is a dynamic and multi-faceted 180-acre campus that is home to a retreat center, educational programs, and an organic farm.
The Stewardship Associate is a full-time position that assists in the day-to-day operations focused routine stewardship tasks to maintain a safe, healthy, and beautiful campus. Stewardship Associates are responsible for tending our campus landscaping, green spaces, orchards, meadows, forest, wetlands, native landscaping, UPick blueberries, vineyard, and food forests. Stewardship Associates report to the Director of Stewardship.
They must possess a solid work ethic with strong organizational and time-management skills, excellent attention to detail, good verbal and written communication skills in English, as well as provide excellent customer service and maintain a professional demeanor. Pearlstone is not close to public transportation – a personal vehicle is necessary.
Tasks/Responsibilities:
Stewardship Associates may be assigned to any of the following job duties. Managers and supervisors reserve the right to determine which task(s) an associate is assigned to depending on operational needs as well as the individual’s strengths and experience.
• Mowing, trimming, and related landscaping. Routine Animal care and pasture maintenance.
• Planting and maintaining perennial beds and rainwater gardens including those around retreat center, cabins, pools, playgrounds, parking lots, signage and rental homes.
• Other tasks may include weeding, mulching, pruning, tree planting, seeding, propagating, sports-field maintenance, cleanup, basic tree work, brush removal, trail clearing, fire-wood splitting, pressure washing, sharpening, routine equipment maintenance, basic equipment repairs, materials handling, light demolition, light carpentry, trash removal, snow removal.
• General Duties including set-up, clean-up, guest and customer assistance,
• Other tasks/duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:
This is an exempt position. Works in a normal indoor, outdoor, farm and forest environment in all weather conditions (except for extreme weather). Potential exposure to noise, dust, pollen, exhaust, chemicals, water, fire, plant compounds, animals, insects, vehicles, tractors, and equipment, heat and cold, and construction/maintenance tools and materials.

The Vermont Youth Conservation Corps’ Food and Farm Program is a dynamic youth development, diversified agriculture and food security initiative. We believe in the power that food has to connect us to the land, our community, and each other. We engage young people in organic farming and culinary education on our historic 400-acre campus in Richmond, Vermont where we grow organically certified vegetables and pasture- raised chickens that are distributed to more than 400 families through our nationally recognized Health Care Share program.
We are hiring 12 leaders to join the 2023 cohort. These are leadership roles on the farm with responsibilities ranging from post-harvest to leading youth crews. The Slide Ranch Instructor position (residential or non-residential) is suited for people with experience in outdoor education and/or who enjoy working with people from all ages and backgrounds. The experiential education programs focus on exploring the farm (pasture with sheep and goats, chickens, ducks, beehives and an organic garden), trails and tide pools, and cooking from the garden. Slide Ranch’s agricultural systems and wild, coastal ecosystem provide the context for hands-on learning, illustrating concepts of ecology, stewardship and sustainability.
We are looking for someone with a passion for nature (who doesn’t mind getting dirty), an enthusiasm for outdoor education, and who enjoys working with children and people of all ages. The position is best suited for a driven, positive and independent worker. The position requires a collaborative and positive spirit to work with a team of instructors and organization staff.
The central focus of the position is on guiding groups around the farm. Slide Ranch programs serve preschool through adult visitors, with the majority being elementary school-aged children from all backgrounds. The work week (Tuesday-Saturday) typically involves 4-5 instruction days and periodically supporting garden and ranch projects. The focus is on school and community groups and family programs.
The 4 month position begins with a 2-week orientation and training period late January/early February. There are 2 days of ranch caretaker training and the remainder of the time (8 days) for instructor staff training. The school and family programs run through late May. In early June the ranch prepares for the upcoming 10 weeks of summer camp.
A typical work day includes rotational, 30-minute farm chores, preparation for the program, leading a program, and program clean-up. For overnight groups, there is also an evening program around the campfire. Several instructional observations, professional development opportunities and coaching by program staff complement the position.

Full Description: Livestock Educator-Ipswich MA Appleton Farms serves the schools and families of our community with immersive, experiential youth education. We build on the Trustees’ expertise in nature conservation, designed landscapes, regenerative agriculture, and culinary education to create our innovative STEAM-centered and systems-based curriculum. Reporting to the Education Manager at Appleton Farms, the Livestock Educator will support Appleton Farms’ mission in two capacities: 1) coordinating and leading public and youth livestock education programs such as weekend family programming and livestock camp and youth programs under the management of the Education Manager; and 2) oversee the care and maintenance of all Appleton Farms education livestock under the oversight of the Livestock Manager. In this role you will work with: Weekend, Family & Youth Livestock Education Program
Execute livestock education programs, including but not limited to weekend family programs, youth and camp livestock activities and lessons, preschool programs that are chaperones, and assist with other livestock education programs such as field study and school partnership programs. Work directly with Education Manager to create, grow, and diversify a livestock education program at the farm. Manage a team of part-time weekend educators and program leaders. Work with Youth Programs Manager and Education Manager to create, improve, and build comprehensive curriculum focused on livestock education for livestock education programs. Track and achieve revenue and membership goals for all livestock education programs. Maintain high standards of education and safety for all education programs. Manage ACME system including program registration setup, registration, and sales. Perform all duties related to execution of education programs including set up, break down, and education supply restocking. Other duties as assigned with or without accommodation. Education Livestock Management
Work directly with the Appleton Farms Livestock Manager to oversee and manage the care and maintenance of all education livestock, which could include (but is not necessarily limited to): dairy cattle and calves, laying and broiler chickens, goats, sheep, and rabbits. Work with Education Manager and Livestock Manager to identify and obtain livestock animals best suited for the education program. Manage a team of part-time staff and volunteers to assist with animal care and education programming. Track and maintain adherence to a budget for education livestock, including animal feed, housing, veterinary care and other associated costs. Maintain high standards of care and safety for all education animals. Maintain the same high standards of safety for all staff, volunteers, youth, and the public when interacting with animals. Other administrative and operational duties as assigned with or without accommodation. Annual Planning and Program Management:
Partner with Education and Property peers to develop annual plans for Appleton Farms public programming for children and families. Responsible for meeting quarterly revenue, participation, and membership targets set by these plans. Work with Appleton’s engagement and education staff to create 12+ programs per month (planned on a quarterly basis) offering a detailed and diverse offering of high-quality learning experiences focused on livestock farming and care. Hire, train and supervise a team of part-time educators to execute public and group programming. Expand volunteer opportunities and grow the volunteer community and membership base through public programming channels. Collaboration with Property and Statewide Peers:
Collaborate with Appleton’s agriculture and visitor experience teams to ensure programmatic alignment, coordination and success. Collaborate with the Trustees Education Department and staff at other Trustees farms to align curriculum and program plans and collaborate on statewide initiatives.
