Another Week at The Sylvia Center

This week we had several programs, each very different from the others. From teens to summer campers, the Sylvia Center will have interacted with around 100 kids by this week's end!On Tuesday, a small group of teenagers from Albany came to Katchkie Farm. These teens were involved in a "youth organics" summer program, so they already had some gardening experience under their belts. They also had plenty of enthusiasm for and interest in the day's activities. They scuffle-hoed large weedy swathes…See More

July at the Sylvia Center

Lately, we have been occupied with multiple farm-to-table education programs for kids, the weekly harvest, and the farmer's market.  Here at the Sylvia Center at Katchkie Farm, we call this phenomenon 'July.' It is easy to get overwhelmed by looking at the July chalkboard calendar on the office wall (nearly every day has some sort of color-coded chalk note), but the good humor and 'we're-all-in-this-together' attitude of my co-workers keep spirits high and operations in motion. This week we…See More

Vision and hopes for the fast-growing movement of farm-based education?
The Sylvia Center at Katchkie Farm hopes that farm-based education organizations will continue to join forces with health-based organizations in order to inspire children eat well.
What is your favorite childhood farm or garden memory?
When I was a kid, my family had a big garden and something that I really looked forward to was when the pumpkins were ready. The reason this was particularly exciting is because when the pumpkins were small, my Dad gently carved our names in the skin of the pumpkin. A scab of sorts would form to show our names as part of the pumpkin, and as the pumpkin grew, our names got bigger too. I thought this was the greatest thing ever. When it was time to pick the pumpkins, we could each find the one with our name, carry it to the front of the house, and find a spot for it to decorate the porch. Well done Dad!

The Sylvia Center at Katchkie Farm: Mission Statement

The mission of The Sylvia Center is to encourage healthy eating habits through direct experiences with freshly grown food. The Center stimulates learning through its farm to table programs at Katchkie Farm in Columbia County, the Children’s Learning Kitchen in Hudson Square, New York, and onsite in schools in New York City. We work in partnership with food and health programs that share the belief that children learn by doing and that through collaborating with nature to grow and cook food, they will gain the necessary skills to make informed and positive choices for their health and their environment.
