BeginTranscription:
Mary McLoughlin: Any proven methods for recruiting staff?

Kristen Allore: Does anyone use the overseas Camp Agencies - Camp America or Camp Counselor USA ?

Brooke: Good schools to contact to post positions: College of the Atlantic, Antioch, Sterling, Simmons, Wheelock, Green Mountain College, Lesley University, UVM

kris young: we have in the past..but not as much lately

Mike R: my best recruitment comes from idealist.org and oriongrassroots network

Mike R: chickens are awesome too

beth Roy: I have posted on Craig's list with success.

kris young: kids are amazed by chickens

Shelby MacLeish: For recruitment we post at all the local colleges-we are in the NYC area and orion.

Brooke we get a lot of summer job inquires so our JOBS page gets a lot of attention in the late winter/spring

kris young: facebook is SO handy with finding and keeping connected to staff

Sonja Riddle: Stonewall just connected on facebook too.

Sonja Riddle: UNH Durham has an organic dariy herd

Kendra: We had an Ag. student from UCONN this summer

Mike R: Kris Young from Pony Farm in New Hampshire is now speaking

Peter Bullock: Reid - what was your staff to child ratio at Farm School?

Reid: We have about 14 staff for 36 kids, ideally, per summer session.

Sonja Riddle: what are the general dates of a nine week camp? We are 6 weeks and find staffing more weeks to be difficult as we often employ teachers

Andy L: If you get more applicants than you can handle, is it just first come first serve, or how do you deal with that?

Reid: We always do first come first served, with a waitlist for overflow.

Brooke: Peter, doesn't shelburne have a raffle to handle overflow?

Peter Bullock: we do a lottery - about 1000 applicants, 650 get in, about 350 on waitlist. We are usually full by Feburary.

Shelby MacLeish: We run an eight week camp and it runs from the end of June-August 21 (or so). We always start camp the first week after school lets out here in NY.

Kristen Allore: If you run a residential camp, what is your fee for the week/session?

Sonja Riddle: We open registration in March to members, then non members and campers are wait listed as the weeks fill. First come first served\

Peter Bullock: Reid - how many staff at any one time are working with kids compared to staff working admin or farm enterprise

Reid: We run 1 week (5 day) programs for $725.

Peter Bullock: we charge $425 per week residential

Angelique Perez: Curious about fee folks charge for a day camp (1/2 day model)

Mary McLoughlin: Reid, is your camp overnight?

Brooke: peter where do your camers sleep? when/where did you get beds?

Shelby MacLeish: We run a day camp-full day. $400/week or $800/2 week session and we offer a 10% discount for members.

Mike R: Our camp is 9:30-2:30 and we charge $160/members and $195/non-members per week

Peter Bullock: for 1/2 day we do $115 - $145 for 5 days

Peter Bullock: our campers sleep in tents - we are farmers camping on the farm.

Christa Hein: We run a day camp and charge $75 for a 2-hour, week long session for 3-5 year olds. Our 6-8 year olds are from 9am-3pm each day for $150. Our 9-12 year olds come from 9am-4pm with one overnight, for $185.

Peter Bullock: we also have one price for members and nonmembers

Peter Bullock: brooke - can we get a transcript of this chat (lots of great data)

Sarah Dunham: this year we did 175/members, 225/non members per week (9:00-4:00 each day). This year we are raising the fee by $20, but have an early-bird period where people can lock in the 2009 rates

Andy L: This past summer our camp was 9-4, five days a week, $125 per camper. We have a low income community, or at least tried to draw from there

Reid: Pretty much all of the staff I mentioned are working with the kids, with 3-5 additional people specifically working on admin

Sidney Morris: FARM Institute runs a farm day camp for 4-15 yr.olds 11 weeks in the summer 9 am to 3 pm with 15 summer staff and about 100 campers.

Reid: We have 2 bunkrooms with beds built by staff, sort of a unique design. Each bunkroom accommodates 20 kids. Our camp is overnight

Andy L: do they wash the eggs too?

Peter Bullock: in a given week at Shelburne Farms, we have about 14 staff with 64 kids. The majority of staff are "work and learn" with some receiving housing, and all with low monetary compensation. The biggest compensation they get is experience.

Peter Bullock: not to mislead, our year-round staff and seasonal staff (about 4-6 per week) are well compensated

Andy L: we charge if psrents need to pick up later in the day to accomdate working parents

Mary McLoughlin: Indoor vs. outdoor time? Exposure to the sun, need for some escape from summer heat.

Mary McLoughlin: ...especially for younger chldren.

Mike R: We have found internal themes to be best for our general camp

Peter Bullock: ages 3-6 we bring out kiddie pools and get into swimsuits; ages 6-14 we swim in Lake Champlain

Mike R: We do have smaller "themed camps" geared torwards bringing repeat campers back again year after year, these only have 8 kids in them

Mary McLoughlin: do you send your campers home with flowers or produce on a daily basis?

beth Roy: We drag the sprinklers out to cool our campers on really hot days.

Mary McLoughlin: Is there opportunity (or enough produce) to have the children operate a food sale farm stand? If so, who are their customers?

Kendra: We do have campers harvest and prepare food which has been excellent...we have made solar ovens but we do have a kitchen available and sometimes I pull in an electric skillet. Kids love to watch eggs fry.

Mary McLoughlin: What food handling certification requirements are there at your farms?

Sidney Morris: Can you clarify your statement that campers just fit in to the work of the farm, but also the staff is required to include curriculum activities that are not about the work of the farm?

farmbasededucation: we play drip, drip splash, a favorite

Kendra: We don't have any food handling certification requirements at this point.

Mary McLoughlin: drip, drip, splash sounds like fun....but what is it?

Mike R: See the results of our informal questionnaire about Farm Camps http://creator.zoho.com/ mercin/summer-camp-recap-web-workshop/view-perma /Summer_Camp_Review_Question_Answers_View/U9DN8f Sqw5MYESNxB6K0e7qZHQUAuXe3GrtVVxN1kBw5RGmjRaYOH YeuXgWd04SAwmnZx3X7zJmVuKmeR0sDaMF1gCV8zE2us5N

Peter Bullock: we have no food handling certification. We are influenced by our food service for our Inn, etc But I would love to hear from someone who does have a certification

Mike R: like duck duck goose but with a pitcher of water

Mary McLoughlin: OK... that sounds like FUN!!

Reid: In MA, our kitchen is inspected annually by the town health inspector, and the head chef is required to have what is called a "ServSafe" certification, which requires about 1 day's class on safe food handling.

Kendra: Does anyone have a farmers market for the families?

Reid: We have a small farmstand for families on our pick-up day. We also sell t-shirts and tote bags.

Kristen Allore: In CT there is a Food Safety Course offerred by the American Food Safety Institute: 800-723-3873 www.americanfoodsafety.cbr>om

Mike R: we well directly from our store when parents pick up their kids

kris young: are most of you involved/affiliated with the American Camp Association?

April hoy: April hoy- we have a farm market on the last day of 9-12 yr camp. The campers harvest/set up/run the market for their parents.

Reid: We're not affiliated with ACA, but we've talked about it, specifically to broaden our advertising reach.

kris young: Brooke are you talking about cheesy rice and ham?

Sonja Riddle: We are starting a CIT program. I am looking to start an email conversation with an ag camp that has an established CIT program.

Mike R: a great place for that discussion would be on the FBEA website: http://www.farmbasededucation.org/group/farmcamps/forum

Peter Bullock: Shelburne Farms could help with your CIT program. We call ours an SIT program (Stewards In Training). Please contact Margaret Burke, mburke@shelburnefarms.org.

Peter Bullock: for food, we try to eat from the farm as much as possible - eggs, beef, lamb, cheese, lots of veggies (and we were doing milk for awhile)

Mary McLoughlin: We've introduced yoga as a part of each day's session, and the children LOVED it!

Mary McLoughlin: Has anyone else included yoga?

Andy L: we did yoga too, to mixed results. the boys were a bit rowdy

Sonja Riddle: We do with our 4-5 year olds with success.

Christa Hein: I did yoga one year and the kids really liked it. They joked around a bit during it, but they asked for it again throughout the week and the following year.

Mike R: yes, animal yoga

Reid: We do yoga daily and it is really a great way to start the day.

April hoy: April Hoy - try fox walking and wide angle vision with the boys

Andy L: ok, we will check that out. is there info about it online or can you tell us about it April?

April hoy: April - check out tracker/ Tom Brown. It is a nice way to help center and bring awareness out.
