Inspire-Nurture-Promote

I'm curious to know if any farm camps are having issues with filling due to the "down economy". I figure we are down about 7%, which compares well to many other camps around the Greater Cincinnati area, but does not make me happy. If we would have made an extra marketing push, I think we would have been above where we were last year.

Additionally, if you are down in numbers, what kind of pressure, if any, do you feel to shrink the budget, especially as it relates to staff? The long term view for me is that staff is the most important aspect of camp and that we don't want to cut staff in the short term (in this case cut someone who was already hired), and negatively effect the long term recruitment and retention of staff.

I was quiet surprised by enrollment this year... We were really low for a while, but then all the sudden we are now full with a waiting list!!!
I think in our case the ecomonmy had people waiting until last minute!!
We have however seen an enormous jump in scholarship requests...
As for staff.. I completely agree adequate staff is crucial to camp running smoothly and SAFELY in a farm environment. I feel it is best to cut other areas while maintaining adeequate staff to camper ratios...
We are facing a very similar situation in the farm. Our camp enrollment is very low and we only require one staff member to run the program. We do have other programs occasionally but we have had to reduce and strictly regulate the hours of one of our part time staff members. The employee with the reduced hours is a very sweet and knowledgeable young woman who is an animal science major. I wish there was a creative way we could make this experience what it should be for her and give her the opportunity to share her knowledge with the young children that come our way.
