The Farm-Based Education Association

Inspire-Nurture-Promote

We are in the process of starting a Non-Profit Farm Education Program on our property in Paxton. MA.  This program is designed for children of all abilities.  Since we are just starting out we are navigating things like liability insurance.  We are working with an agent who writes with Farm Families but for some reason I am having a hard time getting him to understand what type of coverage we need.  Does anyone have any guidance on language I could use?  What types of coverage do other programs have?  We have animals so that exposure is there as well.  We have a horse but will not be doing any riding with the kids but we will be grooming.  He actually asked me to see if I could find a similar program and ask them what type of coverage they have.  It feels like this shouldn't be this hard?

Thanks in advance for any advise you have!

Hello Lisa,

You are correct it shouldn't be this hard and arm Families insures thousands of "Destination Farms" which are private farms that welcome the public for things such as hay rides, petting zoos, corn mazes, wine tastings, etc.  I would push back on your agent and ask him/her to go to the mother ship for this language as Farm Family offers this type of coverage for destination farms across the country.  Just tell him/her that you are like most other destination farms and give him these common examples of activities typical at these places.  If you strike out, let me know and I can contact our agent.  Good luck,

This is from Patrick Connors at the Farm School:

"Since the person asking the question is already dealing with Farm Family (Farm Family does provide liability insurance for Battle Road Farms) - I would suggest their agent talk with the Battle Road Farm agent, Cheryl Loranger, 508-998-0512, about how the insurance there is structured.  Our liability insurance is a bit complicated with different providers, I'm waiting for a coherent response from our agents so I can put something out there in a forum and make sure it's accurate and helpful. As always, feel free to have anyone get in touch with Ben or me directly with any questions about start up stuff."

We are having the same issue of finding liability insurance for our children's garden and farm summer camp program.  Did you find an underwriter for your program?
