The Farm-Based Education Association

Inspire-Nurture-Promote

Is your educational farm classified as a non-profit or a business?

We are starting an educational program on our farm that will welcome children from the area to learn about organic agriculture and seed saving. We will be working with schools and camps, as well as other children's groups like the Girl and Boy Scouts. However, only part of the farm will be devoted to this project while the rest will be kept our private farming operation.

Are there other private farms out there that have educational components that are open to the public on portions of the land? Is the educational component classified as a non-profit? Would it benefit it us to have a non-profit that represents the educational program so we can apply for non-profit funding? What do other farms do?

Any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much.

Hey:

We offered education on our for-profit farm for six years before creating a non-profit education arm last year. Having non-profit status has opened the doors to partnership and volunteer opportunities. We're seeking the funding opportunities now, in part so we can fund a farm-educator position (or two).
