Garden Teacher & Volunteer Coordinator
Position Description
This position is responsible for designing and executing garden based curriculum and volunteer management. This position has a 5-day, 40 hour work week with rotating weekends.
Reports to: The Edible Schoolyard Director
Position Status: Non-exempt
Roles and Responsibilities
Curriculum and Teaching
- Design, conduct, and evaluate garden-based and environmental lessons and activities for guests of all ages
- Design, conduct, and evaluate field trips and summer camp programs that feature the garden and kitchen
- Train volunteers and interns on kitchen and garden duties
- Conduct unscheduled tours of the kitchen and garden
- Mentor and involve weekend staff in programming and activities
Volunteer Management
- Recruit, train, and manage volunteers and interns for the ESY garden and kitchen
- Work with Greensboro Children’s Museum (GCM) operations staff to ensure all volunteers have appropriate credentials (e.g. background checks, first aid certification, etc.) where appropriate
Communication and Connectedness
- Maintain regular communication with ESY team to stay informed on volunteer needs
- Work with all GCM staff to ensure effective team-based work
- Participate in off-site activities to increase food awareness and promote ESY programs
- Write copy for ESY marketing materials
Other Duties
Aside from the aforementioned roles and responsibilities, all GCM staff members are asked to provide assistance when needed to support the GCM team in furthering its mission of promoting learning through play. This may include, but is not limited to: providing back-up on other GCM programming, sitting on ad hoc committees for events, and relationship building.
Qualifications
- A demonstrated appreciation for work in environmental education and edible education, and commitment to local food and the seed-to-table philosophy
- Able to demonstrate knowledge of NC Piedmont growing conditions and seasonality
- Teaching experience
- Gardening experience
- Strong collaborative experience
- Demonstrated creative problem solving skills
- Ability to work and multi-task within an active museum environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Teaching degree
- Strong science background
- Bilingual
Compensation
- Hiring Salary: $28,000 – 34,000
