Shelburne Farms is a 1,400 acre working farm, National Historic Landmark, and nonprofit agricultural and environmental education organization. Our mission is to cultivate a conservation ethic by teaching and demonstrating the stewardship of natural and agricultural resources. Our program goals are to increase awareness and appreciation of natural and agricultural resources and the working landscape, and to inspire active stewardship of the environment.
To support our mission, Shelburne Farms has developed a Work and Learn program to allow individuals to work alongside our staff while learning more about agricultural and environmental education, the history of the farm, and how to become active stewards of the land.
FARM BASED EDUCATION RESIDENCY
The Farm Based Education Residency is a great opportunity for those interested in pursuing a career in Environmental or Agricultural Education to gain early experience in the field. Residents will observe, team-teach, and teach independently in our school programs, summer camp programs, and in the pre-school Adventures program.
COMMITMENT: January-August or April-November
Residents will be expected to work full time and to teach 5 days a week, and will be compensated at minimum wage. Housing will be provided for a learning community immersion experience. They are encouraged to enhance their practical experience through active engagement in other departments on the farm while living on site. A small weekly expense will be deducted to help defer the cost of housing.
REQUIREMENTS: Farm Based Education Residency experiences are for post-college individuals with limited teaching experience. Candidates should enjoy working with children and be excited about learning. A degree in Environmental Studies, Education, Agriculture or a related field is preferred.
