The Farm-Based Education Network

Inspire-Nurture-Promote

SLIDE RANCH is hiring an Executive Director.

Please visit http://www.slideranch.org/ for the full position.

Organization Overview

Located on the dramatically beautiful Marin coast, Slide Ranch teaches kids from diverse backgrounds about sustainable agriculture while reinforcing their interdependence with the environment and connection to the natural world.  To keep our programs accessible to youth from all backgrounds, Slide Ranch keeps program fees low and raises funds to subsidize the visits of lower-income groups.  Our hands-on programs have a significant impact to the kids who participate, growing environmental stewards and emerging leaders in sustainability.

Founded in 1970, Slide Ranch is a non-profit teaching farm located at a historic coastal dairy perched above the ocean in the Marin Headlands within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). Organic gardens, goats, sheep, chickens and ducks, along with numerous coastal trails, tide-pools and pocket beaches, provide an ideal outdoor venue for teaching about healthy foods, healthy living and environmental awareness.

Annually, over 7,000 Bay Area residents participate in Slide Ranch Programs which bring learning to life with experiential education activities on a working farm, using organic gardens and animals to teach an appreciation of where fresh healthy food comes from, and to inspire a lifestyle that includes growing and preparing nutritious foods, getting plenty of exercise, and the sustainable use of natural resources.

Slide Ranch serves groups ranging in age from nursery school to high school. We strive to reach participants from low-income, ethnically diverse and special needs populations, with half of these participants receiving scholarship subsidies, so the experience is available to youth who might not otherwise be able to participate.

Executive Director Position Summary

This pivotal position offers a unique opportunity to take a well established non-profit teaching farm to the next level of impact and significance in the Bay Area community.  As Executive Director, you will have strategic and operational responsibility for strengthening, growing, and funding an effective organization as well as achieving and refining Slide’s vision for the future.

This is a full-time position which requires oversight of programming and fundraising, management of the operational and facilities improvement budget and approximately 20 team members, many of who reside on the Ranch. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and has 6 direct reports.

Slide Ranch offers four major programs:

  1. A School and Community Program, which provides day and overnight programs to Bay Area students, serving 3,000 children and youth and 1,000 adults.
  2. Summer Camps for children ages 5 to 12 and a junior camp counselor program for teens, reaching approximately 500 young people a year.
  3. Family Programs, which provide inter-generational learning opportunities in ecology, stewardship and sustainable gardening to about 1,500 individuals per year.
  4. A Teacher-in-Residence Program, which trains and cultivates a select group of interns each year, preparing them for meaningful careers in environmental education and sustainable agriculture.
