The Visiting Students and Summer Camp Program at Hawthorne Valley Farm is in the process of actively recruiting for the right candidate to join our full time staff as a Director. The responsibility of this position is to oversee both the day to day operations as well as the long term evolution of the program. Our program is embedded in a 400 acre bio-dynamic working farm in upstate NY. Our residential program offers children, ages 8-15, hands-on farm experiences based on the Waldorf approach to teaching. During the school year, Waldorf and private schools visit for our week-long program. During the summer, we welcome campers for 1, 2, and 3 week sessions.
The director supports and leads the program staff in a collaborative manner in order to carry out the mission most effectively. Currently there are 6 full time staff members. Interns and counselors round out the rest of our staffing requirements.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Leader in development and fund-raising efforts for program
- Oversee all aspects of day to day programming operations, including office administration, dining hall management and facilities maintenance
- Hands-on involvement in the school year and summer camp programs, including leading children in farm and nature-based activities and managing any challenges and extraordinary situations that may occur.
- Management of human resource and personnel issues including hiring/firing, evaluations, mentoring, and training. Leadership role in effective and inclusive decision making process.
- Financial oversight, creation and implementation of income generating strategies in collaboration with program staff
- Strategic planning, program growth, new campus project management
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree or higher
- Experience in fund-raising, events planning, development and project management
- Minimum 3 years supervisory experience
- Minimum 1 year residential school program or camp administrative duties
- Experience in Waldorf Education and knowledge of Bio-dynamic agriculture
- Experience in outdoor education
- Ability to originate, plan, organize and carryout daily and special programming
This is a full time salaried position, 45+ hours per week including some weekends, especially during the summer months. The salary is competitive and based on experience.
