The DeLano Farms Apprentices (we are hiring three) will join a small crew (generally 5-6 people) for all farm activities. Responsibilities will include: plant propagation, tractor work, CSA harvest and distribution, farmers markets and completion of special projects as assigned by the DeLano Farm Manager. Each Apprentice will have an area of specialty for the season, such as irrigation, the greenhouse, cultivation, etc. They will be the eyes and ears of that specialty, you will have specific in depth training in that specialty. Apprentices will report to the farm manager the needs and status of their area on a regular basis.
In addition to daily work and interactions with the farm manager, apprenticeships will include an educational training component. This includes specific study on subjects related to organic farming, relevant readings, classroom style sessions, and in the field "teachable moments". We will attempt to visit other local farms through the season to study the diversity of farm designs and agricultural techniques in the area. Our goal is to provide each apprentice with a solid overall training about our farm systems in addition to more extensive training in their particular area of focus.
