Cornell’s Beginning Farmer Education Enhancement ~ Survey

Dear Beginning Farmer supporter,

Cornell’s Beginning Farmer Education Enhancement team needs your help prioritizing the challenges and needs faced by  new farmers after their start-up. This effort is directed at the entire Northeast Region and is an attempt to capture opinions from as broad and diverse a beginning farmer sample as possible. Please share this survey with the farmers you serve, no later than Oct. 8, 2010. If you need a PDF of the survey or a version in Spanish, please contact ejf5@cornell.edu. Otherwise, you can access the survey at this link: www.surveymonkey.com/s/BarrierID

Why is the survey so long?
The items in the survey were generated by farmers and organizations that serve beginning farmers. We didn't want to take the liberty of removing an item that someone else thought was important. If you're willing to help us with this survey, make sure you have about 20 minutes available to go through all of the questions.

How will results be shared?
Results from this survey will be shared with the Beginning Farmer Learning Network, among other venues. It will help inform and focus all of our work, and may help you justify programs and services to funders as addressing high priority beginning farmer needs. Results will also be used by economic, production and social researchers to guide their efforts toward solving the highest priority beginning farmer problems. USDA and other policy makers are also very interested in the results of this effort to help direct energy toward beginning farmers’ most critical concerns.

If you haven't already, please complete the survey yourself; it takes about 20 minutes. As a service provider, you are especially well-positioned to identify the needs and characteristics of beginning farmers.  Second, we ask that you disseminate the survey throughout your network in an effort to directly reach as many farmers as possible. See below for completion options (online or hard copy).

Again, we greatly appreciate your willingness to help identify key issues and concerns on behalf of the Northeast’s beginning farmer population.  Attached is a PDF copy of the survey instrument for disseminating hard copies. If you are willing to hand them out but need to have copies mailed to you, contact Erica at ejf5@cornell.edu to request the number of copies you need. Additionally, the survey can be accessed at www.surveymonkey.com/s/BarrierID and easily completed online.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Erica Frenay at 607-255-9911 or ejf5@cornell.edu; or Dave Grusenmeyer at 315-453-3823 or dgrusenmeyer@nyfvi.org.  Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Sincerely,
