Event Description

We are excited to host our first FBEA Call-In from 3-4 EDT.

This will be the first in the Farm-Based Education Associations series of phone gathering opportunities.

Margaret Burke is the Work and Learn Coordinator at Shelburne Farms in Vermont. She will discuss Internships, Apprenticeships, and Residencies at farm-based education programs.

RSVP on this page to the right.  To RSVP, you must be logged in to the network. It is free to join!  An email will be sent to those who have RSVPd with the Call In access information.

Call-In format and instructions:

The idea of this call-in is that it’s like a webinar without slides. Here’s how to participate:

-Dial the Conference Call number at 3:00pm. The Call In Number is: 1-605-781-1000, Enter Code: 713080#

-When you enter the call you will automatically be on “mute”

-Enter your questions about the Call-In topic into the “Main Room” chat screen during the call. This screen is located on the bottom right of your computer screen when you are logged onto the FBEA website

-When you enter a question or comment please specify if you would like to “discuss” this topic during the Call-In. If so, we will call your name during the call and tell you how to “un-mute” yourself

-This is the first time that we’ve tried the Call-In format. We are excited to see how it works! We welcome any feedback about your experience after the call.

Where do I advertise the position?  Where do I find people interested in these positions?

See or hear you in a few hours.  Thanks.

I also would like to learn more about the legal terms of intern, apprentice, and volunteer. Thanks! Looking forward to it.

So glad you are addressing this issue.  Questions include:

-Define differences in  "Intern" vs "Apprentice" in terms of taxes, required compensation, legal definition, expectations, etc.

-What grants exist to fund these positions?

-Is AmeriCorps or FoodCorps a good source for finding qualified help?

-What are the pros/cons of hiring an elementary school teacher who may not have farm experience vs hiring a farmer without teaching credentials? Can enthusiasm make up for lack of experience?

Hi Everyone!

I'm really looking forward to this Call-In! If it's not too crazy, I'd love to hear from all of you who plan to be on the call about your experience in the world of "Work and Learn" and what your questions are. I want to be sure we are able to address areas of interest important for YOU! I also want to understand what brings you to this forum!

Warmly,
Margaret

Will there be any way to listen to this conversation after the call? Unfortunate prior commitments.

I would like to hear about what 'curriculum' or formal process farms use (or not) to provide quality experiences to their apprentices above and beyond an hourly farm worker.

I would like ot understand labor law and compensation levels regarding apprenticeships/interns.  Does minimum wage apply?
