Description:
This interactive hands-on workshop will focus on the benefits of incorporating farm based education activities and programs on Living History Farms and Museums.  Food and agriculture education has gained momentum across the country recently with farm to school programs and the local food movement.  We'll focus on how ALHFAM members can tap into this by developing and marketing programs that connect to local farm to school programs.  These programs focus on teaching about food, fiber and agriculture and often connect to local museums and organizations as resources.  Participants will learn activities from Project Seasons, a collection of seasonal, interdisciplinary lessons developed at Shelburne Farms.  We'll highlight programming from FBEA member organizations including:  Shelburne Farms, Appleton Farms, Stone Barns, and Battle Road Farms.  National Farm to School Network resources will also be available.   This network supports over 2000 Farm to School programs that ALHFAM members can make connections with.

More About the Event:

In today’s tumultuous times, historians and museum professionals continually face the challenge of finding innovative ways to keep the past alive. Visiting new places, experiencing new opportunities, and sharing our individual successes and failures are valuable parts of that process.

We’re pleased to welcome the Association for Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums to West Virginia for its annual meeting June 4-8, 2011. The Farmstead at WVU Jackson’s Mill has a very rich history as an 18th and 19th century rural economic hub, the boyhood home of Confederate General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, and the first state 4-H camp in the nation. 2011 marks 90 years of operation by the Extension Service of West Virginia University.

The Conference Program Booklet and registration materials are now being prepared for a March mailing to all members. When available it will also be posted on this page as a PDF. You will be able to download the complete program booklet and the registration form (or just the registration form alone), so that it can be mailed to the conference organizers. There will not be on-line registration available via the web.
